adapted from this recipe.
ingredients you'll need:

-10" cast iron skillet

-4 lbs. of granny smith apples

-cinnamon

-white sugar

-1 c. brown sugar

-1 stick of butter

-2 (1 package) refrigerated pie crusts

-1 egg white

-blue bell homemade vanilla ice cream

Want a sweet apple pie, but its have a small crowd?
Try it in a 6-7" cast iron skillet, use 2.5-3 pounds of apples, use 3/4 stick of butter, 3/4 cup of brown sugar, cut 1.5" off the edge of both of your pie crusts, use 3/4 tsp of cinnamon & 1/2 cup white sugar! (I actually like it this way better ;))

not your daughter's ruffle skirt DIY.

Who said ruffles were for 6 y/o and under?

Not this girl.

This skirt is SO cute & so fun to make.

(If you're scared to make this skirt because your hips are "bigger"... do not fear. I've got junk in the trunk and this skirt is still super cute-- i was worried about this at first too!)

supplies needed:

-about 2.5 yards of fabric

-coordinating spool of thread

-scissors//rotary cutter

-a zipper that will look cute exposed

-straight pins

here we go.

First, start by measuring around the largest part of your bottom, and add 1.25 inches. Then, measure from your waist to right above your knee (or where you want the skirt to hit).

Cut out a rectangle of fabric this size. We will call this the skirt form.

(example: 40" around my booty + 1.25" = 41.25, from my waist to right above my knee is 18". So, my rectangle is 41.25" x 18")

then cut strips of fabric that are 3" x WOF (width of the fabric) (usually about 44")

For the length of my skirt, I measured that I needed 9 ruffles. So, I cut 18 strips 3" x WOF.

After the 18 strips are cut, sew short ends together two strips at a time. This will make 9 strips that measure 3" x (about) 88".

On of the 9 strips, I serged the long edges. If you don't have a serger, a zig-zag stitch will work!

Now, on all 9 strips, hem one of the finished long edges.

Next, make the ruffle.

To do this, you will set your machine to its longest stitch (called a basting stitch). Be sure to leave a long thread tail and stitch all the way down un-hemmed long edge of your ruffle piece. Leave another long tail on the other end as well.

Find the center of the rectangle you cut (your skirt form) and find the center of the ruffle and pin about 1/2 inch from the top.

From each of the thread tails you left, grab the bobbin thread and pull. This should ruffle your fabric. Start on one side, ruffle to the center, then move on to the other side and ruffle to the center.

Pin in place & sew a straight stitch (be sure to lower the stitch length!) across the entire skirt form.

repeat this every 2"all the way down the skirt form.

ruffles!!

Next, we will make the waistband.

Measure around your true waist (or where you want your skirt top to hit) add 1/2".

Cut a rectangle that is this size by 7".

(example: 28 + .5 = 28.5, cut rectangle 7" x 28.5")

Press in half on the long length and press the raw edges on each of the long lengths to the inside. (as show above).

Set your machine to a basting stitch again and sew a straight line on the very top of the skirt form (above all of the ruffles).

Make the skirt form top match the length of the waistband.

Now add the exposed zipper.

Place the zipper and the skirt form right sides together and sew a seam up the length of the zipper.

Flip the skirt inside out, line up the zipper and skirt form edge, and repeat.

After the zipper is sewn in, keep the skirt inside out and sew a seam up the bottom part of the skirt that is below the zipper.

Aaaaand... that's all, folks!!

wow. I feel like I say this every week, but can you believe its already friday?

This weekend, I'm road trippin' (with the parents) to Birmingham, AL to see our close family friends that live there. David can't go because he has to work (sad face), but I am excited to see everyone!

at 5 o'clock on Tuesday, you wouldn't believe how many men were in line to buy FLOWERS at our local Tom Thumb. It was hysterical, I just HAD to take a picture.

Alissa & I hosted the Valentine Swap on our blogs & this is a glimpse of the swag she sent me!

David knocked it outta the ballpark this year. Toms, flowers (sent to me at work!!) and the Amy Cornwell ring I've been eying for quite some time. THANK YOU, DAVE :)

Hearts, homemade pizza, and snow. it began to feel like winter for about 24 hours this week. Luckily (sarcasm) its back in the 60s!

Flat tires are NO fun. Coffee dates and Texas-shaped waffles ARE fun.

although we just live in a teeny apartment, I have tried my best to make it as homey as possible. It's definitely not all I have ever dreamed of.. but that's not what "first homes" are about! :)

Here are a few shots from our breakfast room.

I love the color yellow & how it brightens a room. Even in the dead of winter!

our kitchen table//chairs (craigslist) are painted bright yellow & I have a great chocolate colored table cloth (target) & bright yellow place mats (target) on the top.

I always try to keep yellow flowers in the center in one of our favorite wedding gifts (a tilted vase) next to the candle that makes our apartment smell so sweet (tyler candle company).

The bird plates (pier one) & letters (anthropologie) add fun to the white walls.

I am growing to love this little area!

Nightstand Remake DIY

Here's an easy project that will instantly add fun & newness to your room!

start with your old drawers. measure the fronts to know exactly how much fabric you will need.

cut your fabric to match the outside of the drawers.

use spray adhesive on the front of the drawers.

place the cut fabric on top of the spray adhesive.

coat the top of your fabric with mod podge (we used glossy!).

gather your cute hardware

and attach to the drawers. you may have to use the tip of your scissors to poke a hole in the fabric so the hardware will go through.

Can you believe it is already Friday!? It seems like this week just FLEW by!

last weekend I got to head to houston and see some of my best friends from college. we ate at the cutest restaurant, Baba Yega, for Saturday brunch, played at Discovery Green park all afternoon (thank you, unseasonably warm weather!), and then chowed down at Lupe Tortilla for dinner. It was SO FUN seeing friends that I haven't seen in oh so long!

We are doing some redecorating at the store I work at and I have been heading up some of the designing! We re-did a nightstand (simple DIY coming soon!), made a HUGE star quilt (finished picture to come!), and made some pretty patchwork pillow covers. I can't wait to see how things turn out!

I just love a pretty bedroom. There's something about a big open space that you get to sleep in that is so.. serene. The bedroom David and I sleep in currently is small. Not complaining, I mean, we have somewhere to sleep, but as soon as we move out of this apartment, I've already got big plans of making our space more enjoyable to live in!

I love the hardwood floor and the grey bed spread in this room. I think it would be fun to have a lot of neutral.. and then add pops of color here and there via pillows, lamps, etc.

This week seemed to FLY by! I went on a road trip to see my sister on Saturday and finally got the missing pieces to my new sewing machine. We made homemade pizza, drank frozen hot chocolates, and went bowling. I made a new tunic and it rained... a LOT. And... lots of other fun things.

Pattern Review: Schoolhouse Tunic

This week I accomplished something new.

I have been sewing for about 4 years now, but have never successfully completed a paper pattern. Usually I'll get 1/4 of the way through and just give up because I get bored with it (they can be so time consuming!)
Cutting the pattern pieces.

Pinning them to the the fabric.

Cutting the fabric.

Assembling & sewing the pieces.

Reading a million instructions....

ETC.

BUT, last week my boss gave me the job of trying out a sample pattern we received at our shop... so I was pretty determined!

The pattern I used is the Schoolhouse Tunic made by Sew Liberated.

I found some pretty Kaffe Fassett fabric and went to town.

I spent the first evening cutting out the pattern pieces, cutting out the fabric, and then serging the raw edges. This took about an hour and a half.

The next night I assembled the tunic. This took another hour and a half or so.

The pattern itself was written really well. Its a GREAT pattern for a beginner seamstress or pattern reader (THAT'S ME!). There are no confusing instructions, no zippers, and the elastic is totally optional (I opted out)!

If I were to make the tunic again (which I will definitely do!) I would probably go down a size (I normally wear a size 4 or 6, so I went with the size 6 to be safe.. I wish I had gone down a size!) and add ties in the back to make it look more fitted (because some of the pictures I took made me look pregnant, ha ha!)

Overall, its a fabulous beginner pattern that can look flattering on any body style. Completing this pattern has really given me the confidence to tackle other (more difficult) patterns-- I am itching to get started!

I really encourage you to purchase a Schoolhouse Tunic pattern for yourself & make your own!

This year I'm going to try something new.

To run.

This isn't really a new years resolutions thing because frankly, I hate those.

This is a I've always wanted to be a good runner thing.

In middle/high school I played sports. All kinds of sports: volleyball, basketball, tennis, etc. so being in shape/staying active was always part of my day. Needless to say.. I never went to the gym to work out. I was just being super active all the time.

I went to college and didn't even know how to workout. I went to the rec center and immediately became overwhelmed with all of the machines and macho guys. Everyone seemed to know exactly what they were doing. I did not.

I piddled around on the elliptical.. kind of.

Then David and I started dating and we would go together. I wasn't so overwhelmed anymore because I had my very own macho guy helping me ;)

I learned to work out.

But I was always envious of the runners. The ones (like my roommate) who could just straight up run for a solid hour. WHAT? how?

any.ways...

I've always wanted to be able to do that, so this year is going to be the year I do it.

Oh, I hope (and pray) I have success.

I downloaded the iMapMyRun app on my phone to track my progress. We will see how it goes!

So here's where I need your help.

I need a good solid playlist that's going to help me stay motivated to keep on running. PLEASE. I mean, PLEASE comment and tell me your favorite songs to run to.

Also, if you have any advice.. now is the time to tell me :)

NYE 2012

David and I spent New Year's Eve in downtown Fort Worth with good friends! Oh what a fun night we had!

Despite the fact that I left my camera's memory card at home, I was able to document our evening via Instagram.

We started at dinner with just the two of us. We celebrated our one year engagement-iversary because on New Year's Eve in 2011, David popped the big question! After that we met up with friends that we hadn't seen in quite some time. It was a lovely evening.

On Sunday, everyone met for a late brunch and we spent the remainder of the day being lazy, chatting, and just hanging out. The night ended with burgers and goodbyes!

How did you ring in the New Year?

where to begin?

The new year was rung in by David asking me to be his wife.

I had a great time asking my bridesmaids to be a part of our wedding.

I made a t-shirt quilt.

I found my perfect dress.

I visited one of my best friends (whitney) in Nashville.

We had engagement pictures taken.

I went with my family to Disney World.

Fun times were had with friends.

I turned 23.

One of my best friends got married (carly).

My cousin won the Miss Texas pageant.

We counted down.

And FINALLY got married.

And went on a honeymoon to Colorado.

My sister moved into her dorm and is now a college freshman.

Cotton Lane re-opened for business!

David and I went on tons of date nights.

We took Whitney & Brian's engagement photos.

I met famous people.

I made new friends.

We spent our first Christmas season together.

And I wrote tons of new DIYs.

Geez. I guess I've been busy this year! I wouldn't trade one single second for anything. The Lord has blessed me immensely and I am so grateful for that!

Here's to 2012 being better than ever!

My bosses grandchildren from Boston are in town this week and came up the to fabric shop the other day to pick out some fabric for a couple of Paper Bag Skirts. Ava picked out the CUTEST Amy Butler & Tula Pink fabrics... and I just LOVE how they turned out!

isn't she the cutest?!

I absolutely LOVE making kids clothes. Especially skirts. Little ones looks so adorable in bright patterned fabrics!

A: I love where I live-- Seattle-- but I think I need a home in Central France-- specifically the Loire Valley or Dordogne region. I'm picturing a little cottage with a few acres-- within walking distance of some nearby villages but still rustic and rural.

Christmas is almost here, y'all!

David and I are leaving tomorrow to visit my family for the weekend. We are super excited to have time away from work, and just relaxing in East Texas!

here's a little christmas quiz inspired by casey and found here.

1. egg nog or hot chocolate?

hot chocolate all the way.

2. does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?

in my family, they sit under the tree. in David's family, they are wrapped. I guess when we have kiddos, we'll have to figure that one out!

3. multi-colored or white lights on tree/house?

white.

4. do you hang mistletoe?

nope.

5. when do you put up decorations?

either the weekend before or of Thanksgiving.

6. what is your favorite holiday dish?

we always eat shrimp on Christmas eve.

7. favorite holiday memory as a child.

waking up and realizing Santa had brought me a trampoline.

8. when did you learn the truth about Santa?

no idea. probably 9 or 10? i really don't know. it wasn't life-altering news, ha ha

9. do you open a gift on Christmas eve?

actually, in my family, we open all of our gifts from one another on Christmas eve and then Santa comes in the morning.

10. How do you decorate your Christmas tree?

this year, very simply.

11. Snow! Love it or dread it?

Love it and hope for it every year.

12. Can you ice skate?

yes, a little.

13. Do you remember your favorite gift?

Last year my family gave me round trip tickets to see my best friend in Nashville-- that was pretty awesome!

14. What's the most important thing about the holidays for you?

Being with family.

Christmas Craft Along: White Chocolate Covered Pretzels

This isn't technically a Christmas craft, but I wanted to share it anyways because they are so delicious and SO easy!

what you're going to need:

mini pretzels

a couple of bags of white chocolate chips

red & green sprinkles

freezer paper

All you do is melt the chocolate chips in a bowl, dip the pretzels in, place them on freezer paper, and sprinkle with sprinkles!

YEP, its really that easy!

After they're dry, I alway stick them in the fridge for a couple of hours before we head to where we are taking them (aka a Christmas partaaay!)

this week was such a jam-packed week, that I want to take this time to sit back and reflect on all the "little things".

If you knew how LITTLE I like to clean/ be organized, then you would know that the organization of my studio that happened on Monday was actually... a BIG thing. Like really big!

cold hands, warm hearts 2011.

This is my second year in a row to participate in Cold Hands, Warm Hearts; a swap hosted by Ilene from Much Love, Illy and Sandy from Sandy a la Mode.

Last year, my partner & I were super procrastinators and didn't get our packages to each other until after the linky party was over (OOPS!). But this year, I was determined to make it in time!

I was matched with the lovely Adelyn (or Addie ;)) from Randomness from the Addie Corner. She is such a sweetie, you should definitely go check out her blog!

Addie really knocked it outta the ballpark. She got me a sweet book, a necklace from her friend who is a missionary in Africa, an iPhone case, candy, lotion, etc. etc.

...and of course: THE GLOVES.

Fingerless gloves, at that. My fave. And they are so super soft. I can't get over how much I love them!

Christmas Craft Along: Christmas Card Holder

Hi Friends!!

Welcome to the third week of Christmas Craft Along! Thank you for linking up all of your fun Christmas projects last week!!
Lets do it again today!
Grab a button & link up-- the more people who link up, the more people who will see YOUR project!

Here's mine:

things you need:
embroidery hoop
felt
yarn
hot glue gun
clothes pins

start by wrapping the embroidery hoop with yarn.

take a 1 1/2"- 2" strip of felt...

and fold it in half.

cut along the folded edge...

or the raw edge down the length of your strip.

start at one end and roll your fabric towards the other end gluing as you go.
when you're finished you'll get pretty little felt flowers like these:

glue them on to your yarn-wrapped embroidery hoop.

and then add your clothes pins!

how CUTE and simple is that?!

My week in Instagram photos!

on Sunday, David and I traveled (by train) to the White Rock marathon in Dallas. His mom was running in the half and while we didn't actually see her finish (somehow we missed her!!) we were there for moral support in the freezing rain!

This week was sooooopaah busy... lets just say: I am exhausted. Can't wait for a break!

I made some cute coffee cozies for gifts AND finished this sample quilt for the fabric store I work in. I used Tula Pink, Valorie Wells, and Michael Miller. and I LOVE the way it turned out!

Christmas Craft Along: Coffee Cozy DIY

Hi Friends!!

Welcome to the second week of Christmas Craft Along! Last week you guys linked up the cutest projects! Lets do it again today!

Here's mine:

Supplies List:

-A cardboard coffee cozy from your local coffee shop or Starbucks

-1/8 yard of fabric

-1/8 yard of felt or fleece

-1 button

-A piece of elastic

Stack your felt & fabric and cut using the coffee cozy as a pattern. Leave an extra 1/4"-1/2" on the top and bottom (as pictured below).

Place the fabric & felt right sides together and sew around three of the four edges. Leave one side open and turn right sides out. Tuck the fabric under to hide the raw edges on the side that was left open for turning and press.

Make a loop with your elastic and place the ends in the center of your open end. Pin in place and top stitch over the fabric, elastic, and felt.

On the other end of your coffee cozy, hand sew your button on.

Wrap it around your hot (or cold!) drink & you're good to go!

Isn't this a fun & easy stocking stuffer?

Last weekend I got to see my best friend, Whitney! I love her.

Nights this week have consisted of crafting in preparation for Handmade Holidays next Friday & Saturday!

Have y'all seen the movie Tangled? Oh my word it is SO CUTE! Go see it.

I am also stylin in my new boots from DSW. Love.

Pinterest did it again. I made shrimp & mushroom ravioli from this recipe and made the caprese salad I blogged about yesterday. It was QUITE the spread!

This weekend David and I plan on getting some of our Christmas shopping done AND we are taking a visit to the Fort Worth food truck park that has its grand opening TONIGHT! I am so excited!

One of my favorite things about Pinterest is that it takes the Internet and turns it into a giant cookbook.

I really LOVE cooking. And I'm pretty good at experimenting with recipes (you know, when we don't have ALL the ingredients, but could substitute one thing for another?)

SO, since I joined the world of Pinterest, it has become by go-to for recipes.

Here are a few that I found & we have tried and LOVE!

baked black bean taquitos. we add shredded chicken and LOVE to eat this. tastes like Chuy's.

The McLendon Whereabouts Blog" started when my husband and I--newly married-moved to the big city of Atlanta and away from both sides of our families. christmas craft along: christmas tree napkin DIY

Hey everyone!! Today is Week One of the Christmas Craft Along on my little bliggity blog!
Are you ready to link up your Christmas-Crafty-Goodness?!
I'm here today with a DIY on making the cutest Christmas Tree Napkins... I hope you enjoy!

Don't forget to link up at the end of this post AND grab a button to tell your peeps about our party over here!

What you need (makes 2 napkins):
2 Fat Quarters of pretty coordinating Christmas fabrics
The biggest mixing bowl you have
Scissors
Coordinating thread
Iron & board

Stack your fabrics and place the mixing bowl upside down on top of them.

Cut around the bowl (through both fabrics) about an inch away from the bowl.

Fold your circles in half and cut down the fold.

Now you should have 4 semi-circles.

Pin two coordinating semi-circles right sides together and sew almost all the way around the edge. Leave 1-2" for turning.

Flip your semi-circles right sides out and top-stitch the opening you left for turning.
Fold & press like a Christmas tree. (Follow the folds below).

Repeat for the other two semi-circles & you've got yourself two festive Christmas tree napkins!

Hi, Friends! Here are some of the many instagrams I took this week!

Christmas decorations are UP! Can't wait to crank up the music & eat peppermints all the time! :)

My sweet husband bought me flowers & we attempted macarons. it was so fun! (and super messy...)

I made some fun felt flowers for brooches, headbands, & other goodies! and also bought a battery-powered hot glue gun for our road trip-- holler!

takin' care of bizzzznass & a what i wore post

Goooood Morning, wonderful people!

How are you on this beautiful (and chilly!) Wednesday morning?

Well, let me just say that I am super excited that today is here! I am working until 3, and then David and I are headed off to College Station for the rest of the week.

We will get to spend time with friends & family, eat a lot of yummy food (I'm bringing 4 cheese backed macaroni!) aaaaaand see the Ags beat the t-sips!

Oh, and to top it off... on Saturday, when we head back to Fort Worth, we're meeting my family & my best friend Whitney's family for a little rendezvous at Cowboys Stadium!

So excited for this weekend!

Are you just as excited about turkey day as I am?! What are you and your family's plans?

Just a little FYI... if there's anything in my shop that you have on your Christmas list, you better grab it before next week! After next week, my shop's going in vacay mode to prepare for a handmade market that I am participating in AND then so I can spend tons of time with my man & our families over the holiday season. homemade peppermint mocha recipe!

Ready for the most delicious holiday drink recipe of the year!?

ok, here it is y'all!

PEPPERMINT MOCHA!

It just happens to be my most favorite drink at Starbucks, but at $5 a pop, its just not worth it all the time.

So... I did some experimenting & came up with this close second...

what you need:

a handfull of peppermints

milk

hot chocolate mix

whipped cream

espresso/strongly brewed coffee

First, get a cup and a half of milk

add 4-5 peppermints and start heating on the stove.

while the peppermints are melting & the milk is heating up, brew your strong coffee or espresso. (you don't need a ton!)

When your milk is ready to go, it will be a lovely shade of light pink!

add your milk to the hot chocolate mix.

and then top your hot chocolate off with your espresso/strongly brewed coffee. (probably 1-2 shots of espresso-- i usually just eyeball it!)

top your concoction with whipped cream & you're good to go!
